Oil and geopolitics steer markets this week

The coming week in global markets will hinge on geopolitical tensions and crude oil prices, with analysts pointing to the Strait of Hormuz and U.S.-Iran relations as the primary drivers of investor sentiment.

Strait of Hormuz tensions take center stage

Trading activity in equities, particularly in emerging markets like India, is expected to be heavily influenced by developments in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments—has become a focal point amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

“Developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the trajectory of Brent crude will remain critical market drivers in the near term,” said Ajit Mishra, senior vice president of research at Religare Broking. With corporate earnings season now behind investors, attention has shifted to macroeconomic factors, including monetary policy and geopolitical risks.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes, set for release on August 19, will be closely scrutinized for clues on the Federal Reserve’s policy direction. A more hawkish tone could trigger volatility in Indian equities, particularly if it leads to capital outflows from emerging markets.

Oil prices and foreign investor flows under scrutiny

Last week, Indian markets snapped a two-week winning streak, with the BSE Sensex falling 0.62% and the NSE Nifty declining 0.83%. Analysts attributed the pullback to rising crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical concerns, which dampened investor risk appetite.

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that foreign institutional flows will be another key factor to watch. “Investor attention in the coming week is likely to remain firmly focused on developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the broader U.S.-Iran standoff,” he said. Beyond geopolitics, traders will also parse Chinese economic data for signs of global growth momentum.

Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, echoed the sentiment, adding that crude oil movements, FOMC minutes, and Chinese economic indicators will provide further cues on the Fed’s policy outlook and broader market trends.

Market reaction and outlook

Pabitro Mukherjee, deputy vice president of research at Bajaj Broking, emphasized that crude oil price movements and U.S.-Iran developments will be the dominant themes for traders. “Investors will closely track these factors as they assess risk and adjust their portfolios accordingly,” he said.

For now, traders are bracing for a week where headlines—not earnings or economic data—will dictate the direction of the markets.
